Song Book, Vol. 4.3 (2021) is a collection of pieces features five duos written for 4.3 octave marimbas (or smaller). It was supported by a consortium of over 283 people from around the world, who helped bring this music to life.

Oftentimes, 4.3 octave marimbas are the only option available for students and professional percussionists. I experienced this firsthand during my high school years, where 4.3 synthetic instruments were the norm. I continue to experience this through my present-day travels, where affordability dictates the kinds of instruments students and schools have access to.

In the end, I wanted to create a set of pieces that would be accessible to more players, written on instruments that might be more affordable to own. I also wanted to write these pieces for two mallet playing, which tends to be underutilized and undervalued in today’s four mallet focused environment.
