Ofrenda for a Friend (2026) is a saxophone quartet commissioned and premiered by Zed Quartet with support from the Rainwater Fund for American Music.

The piece is an offering to my childhood best friend. He recently celebrated seven years of sobriety, and other than my wife and children, he is the person I’m most proud of in the world. His perseverance is inspiring, and to see him thriving as a father, husband, and human brings me joy to no end.

It was special to revisit the saxophone through this creative process, an instrument I spent the better part of my teenage years studying and obsessing over. Exploring my creative voice through Ofrenda brought back great memories, including ones with my best friend, who was always there to support my early saxophone pursuits.

I am grateful to the ever-talented Zed Quartet for bringing this music to life and caring so much for this project. I am forever grateful to the four of you.
