Program Notes

Into the Air (2010) is a marimba duet dedicated to Michael Burritt, professor of percussion at the Eastman School of Music. The piece is scored for two 5.0 octave marimbas, but can be adapted for one 5.0 and one 4.3.

I had the pleasure of studying percussion with Michael for two years at Eastman, and learned so much from him about life, music, hard work, and dedication. He is truly a devoted teacher who goes out of his way to ensure his students are in a good place, both musically and otherwise.

Into the Air attempts to capture Michael’s energy and enthusiasm, and features elements of rock and tonal minimalism.
