Hands Up was composed to encapsulate the ongoing race issues in the United States. The words used in the piece are not my own. The text comes from numerous interviews and twitter hashtags from protest events in Ferguson, Staten Island and beyond. I believe these protests and feelings hold significant historical and societal value, which is why I composed this work. At the premiere, a lone audience member began yelling racial slurs and began to protest the piece. Fortunately, we were louder than he was…
The piece is scored for 10 players total: drum set soloist, four percussionists who rhythmically vocalize text (ala Cage’s living room music) via amplification / megaphones, two marimbas, piano, xylophone, and crotales. It’s art / rock / rally music; perhaps my Zach de la Rocha and Rage Against the Machine influence comes through.
